The Hull of the Sou'wester 59 is constructed using the patented Scrimp laminating system, in which vinylester resin is infused into the laminate fabric under vacuum pressure. The laminate is composed of a knit hybrid Kevlar/E-glass configuration with a core of end-grain balsa. The core material is used to make the hull thicker, which reduces deflection without adding significant weight. An isopthallic gelcoat and a chopped mat/vinylester resin skin coat are used for the outermost layers, to provide maximum osmotic blistering protection.

In areas such as the hull/deck connecting flange, centerline, keel, rudder post, and at all through-hull fittings, the core is removed and the hull is reinforced with additional layers of fiberglass. A high-density foam core is used in the way of chain plate reinforcement.

The hull shell is supported by a combination of foam-cored fiberglass stiffeners and marine-grade plywood bulkheads.

The Deck is hand-laid, using orthopthallic resin reinforced with a knit hybrid fabric of Kevlar and E-glass. Cross-linked PVC foam is used as a core on all horizontal surfaces. Vertical surfaces are not cored.

A high-density core is used as reinforcement under high load areas, such as genoa tracks, etc. The core is eliminated entirely under very high load areas, such as primary winch pads and hull/deck flanges. These areas receive additional lamination to ensure that adequate strength is maintained.

ZANETIA s electrical set-up to be compatible with both U.S. and European systems:

  • European 220-volt AC 50 hz cycle to power all 50/60 hz devices

The electrical system is separated into five sub-systems as follows:

  • 12-Volt DC House System
  • 12-Volt DC Starting System
  • 24-Volt DC House System
  • 230-Volt 50Hz AC System
  • Battery Charging System

12-Volt Start System:

  • The main engine and generator are both started from a 12-volt GLP-31 battery located below the passageway sole, near the engine room door. This Starting Battery is charged by the 12-volt battery charger on the aft bulkhead in the engine room, and by the smaller 12-volt alternator on the port side of the main engine.

12-volt House System:

  • This system includes four 12-volt GLP-8D batteries connected in parallel. These batteries are located below the cabin sole in the aft head. They are charged by the large 12-volt alternator on the starboard side of the main engine, or by the 12-volt battery charger mounted on the aft bulkhead of the engine room. These batteries do not require maintenance.

24-volt House battery system:

  • The 24-volt House Battery system is used to power the windlass, the furling system, the electric utility winch at the base of the mast, the bow thruster, and the inverter. The system includes two 24-volt batteries connected in series-parallel. These batteries are charged by the 24-volt Victron Battery Charger, and are also charged with power drawn from the 12-volt DC House Batteries and converted to 24?volt DC by the two Newmar 12-24-18I converters.

230-volt AC System:

  • The 230-volt AC system may be powered from shore power or from the generator. There are two shore power circuits. The shore power connections are on the starboard side of the cockpit coaming, near the aft end. The AC panel, located in the passageway, contains meters to indicate the load current, line voltage, line frequency, and inverter voltage.
  • A Victron Battery Charger is installed beneath the cabin sole, near the mast step. Separate Pure Sine inverter for OceanPC computer system.

(2) Shore power cords

  • Second 50-amp cord with all wiring, switches and isolation transformer

  • Acme T-3-535475 isolation transformer allows US 240-volt AC 60 Hz or European 220-volt AC 50 Hz to power all 50/60 Hz devices.
  • Charles 93-IXFMR12T-A 240-volt 50/60 hz isolation transformer is on primary shore cord inlet
  • Transformers to allow connection to U.S. or European power

2011 Westerbeke 5.7 EDT 5.7-Kw generator (1774 hrs. 6/05/2015) provides 220-volt 50-cycle power.

  • Generator is soft-mounted in the engine room in a separate sound enclosure.
  • Racor fuel filter with drain petcocks and water sensors - alarm at panel

Also included:

  • Electrical spares
  • Lightning protection at masthead.

Electrical bonding system:

  • The bonding system consists of copper strips which are fiberglassed against the hull inner skin and join all of the significant metal parts of the boat together to help protected against galvanic corrosion using zincs, reduce AC electrical malfunction shock hazard, low resistance path to ground for lightning strike protection, and minimized radio interference.

Sound insulated engine room is reached by moving aft in the passageway toward the aft cabin. The engine room is located inboard and houses all pumps, engine, generator, compressors, etc.

Main engine is a Yanmar 4LHA-DTE 158 HP @ 3100 rpm. FWC diesel with a ZF 1:2.5 reduction gear transmission, Aquamet 22 stainless steel shaft, PSS shaft seal with a 3-blade Maxprop.
