RUGOSA is Herreshoff Manufacturing Company #983. Constructed in 1926.
A classic NY40, RUGOSA provided 30 years of extreme cruising and racing pleasure for Halsey C. Herreshoff and friends.
NY 40 yachts earned the accolade "Fighting Forties." RUGOSA has emulated that competitive spirit by winning the 1928 Bermuda Race and scores of conquests since. Trophies show wins in Nantucket, Newport, New York, Cannes, St.Tropez, Antiqua and at Cowes. RUGOSA, fleet of speed, strong of structure, comely of style, has also served admirably for world-wide cruising: Transatlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Caribbean. Whether in exotic ports, crossing Loch Ness, or sailing the Greek Islands. RUGOSA has been universally admired. It could all continue under new ownership of RUGOSA!
-A letter from Halsey Herreshoff
RUGOSA was built yawl rigged in 1926, and is the most original preserved of all NY 40s with original spars, deck houses and below arrangement. She enjoys a remarkable chain of racing success and very outstanding extensive cruising of the entire East Coast of the USA, Caribbean, Sweden and much of the Baltic, western European coast, Mediterranean and many transatlantic crossings.
I have owned and sailed RUGOSA for 30 years, deriving incredible pleasure in cruising and sharing distinct satisfaction along with my entirely amateur crew for racing successes. Most significant was the victory of RUGOSA over 57 other classic yachts, largely from Europe, in the 2001 America's Cub Jubilee week-long regatta at Cowes, Isle of Wight, England.
Now, I sell (reluctantly) my cherished RUGOSA because of practicality of my advancing age (Get out when ahead.)
For the buyers of this special yacht (now in storage at Portsmouth RI, USA) I will provide full commissioning to the standards of perfection that I have continuously sought for all of my many great sailing seasons with this yacht. Thus, the yacht could be available for dock side departure from Rhode Island or available for shipping to another port of the purchaser's selection.
I am available for telephone conversation or electronic sharing of information.
