Classic Tall Ship
|Type||Antique and Classics, Sloop|
|Location||United States, United States|
The Continental Sloop Providence is an accurate replica of Americas first war ship.
The Providence was built in 1768 by the Brown family of Providence RI. She was the first vessel purchased by the Continental Navy and was John Paul Jones' first command. He went on to fame aboard the Bonhomme Richard and then became the father of the US Navy after the revolution.
This replica was also built by the Brown family in 1976.
She is 61' on deck and 110' overall putting her in Class A with the American Sail Training Association guidelines.
The Providence has participated in and earned fees at nearly every tall ship event in the US and Canada.
She has made in excess of $600,000 in Disney films Pirates of the Caribbean movies and has recently completed filming of a major motion picture staring Cuba Gooding Jr. She also completed a Tall Ships tour to Nova Scotia and participated in the Tall Ships festival in Portsmouth NH and Newport RI.
The hull is solid fiberglass and she carries 13 working canons
She has been Coast Guard inspected and approved continuously until recently when she was toppled over in a brutal winter storm sustaining a holed hull and broken spars. Her price has been drastically cut to reflect this condition. She is now being made available as a project to bring her back to her past glory. . She has been moved on her own bottom to her current location in Somerset Mass. All equipment is available and intact, engine is operational and powered her to her current location.
Unfinished spars have been procured and are with the boat and will be sold with the boat. All the spars are solid spar grade Douglas Fir (same as the originals) from western Washington State, see new photo attached.
The Providence has a solid fiberglass hull no core. When she fell she had a Coast Guard COI with no deficiencies.
Samples have been taken around the hole and determined that the damage is very localized around the hole, no delamination was found anywhere else.
The patch on the bottom is temporary and would need to be redone, photo attached. The interior below has been removed and is stored intact so as to make room for repairs.
The hull has an external lead keel that runs the entire length of the bottom and is bolted with 24 1" bronze bolts that were inspected in 2011.
She will require very little maintenance once repairs have been completed and the new rig installed. She may well out last every private tall ship out there and she is still the official tall ship of Rhode Island.
Photos of The Providence in this listing reflect her condition prior to and after the winter storm incident.
